Sarah Bacon

I’m a Washington D.C. native, writer, activist, rare disease patient and advocate, and lover of the arts, nature and animals. As a communications professional I produced large scale socially responsive public art installations in New York City with Creative Time, launched a museum on a former Cold War military base in the Taiwanese strait, designed outreach campaigns for national and international  progressive organizations with Fenton Communications. A climate activist, I produced an environmental podcast, worked for ride-sharing startups on sustainable behavior change and on resiliency in Mayor Bloomberg’s office, founded two groups on Block Island to promote sustainability, Block Island Residents for Renewables (BIRR) and RespectBI, and obtained an MS in Sustainability Management from Columbia University. As a rare disease patient and advocate I’ve written for TheAtlantic.com, The Washington Post, Fast Company, and New York Magazine. Currently I’m working on my first manuscript, Living With Zebras, a memoir/narrative journalism work on rare disease patients turned citizen scientists. Through my health journey with a progressive ultra rare lung disease I discovered guided psychedelic therapy in 2018. I’m currently training to be a somatic psychotherapist with a focus on psychedelic therapy facilitation to help people in the rare disease community and beyond heal and grow. I’ve served on the boards of Refugees International and the Frontier Nursing University for many years. When I’m not on Block Island I live with my partner, Bruce, and dog, Lucky, in New York City and Kent, Connecticut.
